Probably like many of you I was recently reviewing the past year and considering 2010. During this period of reflection, I was once again impacted by a powerful quote I once read and it reminded me of the constant challenge we face to keep ourselves and our churches advancing.
'When our memories exceed our dreams, the end is near.'
I do find that statement a bit scary as I can be nostalgic and enjoy memories of the past; however, I understand we can't live there. I suppose we have this constant challenge of 'learning from the past, living in the present and always thinking future.' If we don't consistently do this there is a tendency to drift into maintenance mode, this can then lead to complacency and then failure. David did this 'when kings went to war David stayed at home'. Sampson did this 'I will just do what I did before', this sounds to me like he was living on past successes. Complacency is a subtle, slow, creeping disease, so let's make sure in 2010 that 'our memories don't exceed our dreams.'
